A team led by a Goan photographer has won three awards at the World Photographic Cup and will receive the awards in Rome at an event which will be held in the final week of April and the first week of May. The team led by Rohan Goes had a team of nine who contributed photographs across different categories. Now three from that team are going to Rome, of which two will be receiving awards and two others have expressed their interest in being part of the team.

Rohan said one of the Indian winners is in the category of Nation award from the year 2021 and the second one is for the year 2022. Another winner is in the top 10 final group and he is confident the individual will bring in the third medal for the country. The group is now in the process of going around meeting with corporate and individuals seeking donations to help fund their trip. Rohan said the program would be a wonderful opportunity to meet photographers from different parts of the world and exchange ideas. He expressed the hope there would be a much entries from India. He said “From a population of a billion, we were able to get only ten people interested, which was very disappointing. I hope to get a lot more people interested for the next edition of the WPC”.

Speaking about the competition he said the WPC was founded in 2013 as a cooperative effort by The Federation of European Photographers (FEP) and Professional Photographers of America (PPA). Its singular goal was to unite photographers in a spirit of friendship and cooperation. A governing committee was created to conduct the ongoing affairs of the competition, also supported by United Asian Professional Photography and Australian Institute of Professional Photography. He said photography was a bond that transcends language, culture, and geography. That’s the foundation behind the World Photographic Cup.

It is a competition with teams of photographers representing their home countries. Each country is allowed to enter one team. Each team develops its own process for choosing images to enter Teams may enter up to three images in each of six categories: Portrait, Wedding, Commercial (including advertising, architecture, industrial, fashion, etc..), Illustrative/Digital art, Reportage / Photojournalism, Nature (Landscape / Wildlife).

Last year it could not be conducted because of the Coronavirus and this year is expected to be a gala event.

Rohan said it was always interesting to meet other photographers from other countries because the approach to photography was dictated by ones culture and even sex. He said “Women approach a subject so very differently and so it always makes for interesting conversations. Even across cultures, the manner in which one approaches a subject is so very different. Yet at the end of the day all photographers follow a certain routine. It is always an interesting experience.”

One can only hope the team will be able to be present at the event scheduled to start on April 30 and end on May 3.
