Hands off Educational Institutions

Jose Maria Miranda

Not satisfied with imposing its views on independent institutions like the Enforcement Directorate, the CBI, the Election Commission and even trying its luck in the Supreme Court, the present Central Government is now trying its stunts with Educational Institutions, either directly or through puppet State Governments.

Notwithstanding strong denials, the public are aware that the Governments are directing the actions of the ED and the CBI, as raids are frequent against leaders of parties opposed to BJP, at times, precisely at election time when they could pose a danger to the BJP. In some cases, no proof of involvement of such people has been found even months after the raids or inquiries. However, what is really intriguing is that in almost every raid or investigation, the accused are always from the opposition and never from the BJP, when we all know, for sure, that even in Goa, some of the traitors who took shelter in BJP, had skeletons which would have tumbled out, had they not behaved like monkeys.

The Government is already trying to rewrite History, which, as everyone knows, will be done according to the ruling Party’s whims and fancies. It is also trying to impose its will and interfere in admissions, management and other decisions of aided institutions.

Recently, ABVP, students’ wing of the BJP, allegedly entered the campus of Goa University, at the dead of the night and put up some posters. It is rumoured that the security guard allowed them entry as he was shown a letter from a Goa Minister permitting their entry. Few days later, some three students of St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, accompanied by two outsiders, all allegedly belonging to ABVP, created a ruckus inside the class rooms of the College. Apparently, the Police was called but did not act, until the Mamlatdar or SDO turned up. My question is why didn’t the Police act promptly against the two outsiders, even if it felt that the three students could have some reasons to be there?  The video going viral says that ABVP members met the CM, a few days earlier, and suspect that they were given the go ahead for the agitations by the CM himself.

Besides, many assault incidents reported in Herald, there are at least two recent, one serious, by two bouncers against someone who had complained about a dirty toilet and the second against a lady who defaulted in paying commission on the Laadli Laxmi amount she had received. Here, the police appear to have taken some action, possibly because both the accused and the beneficiary were allegedly BJP supporters.

It is sad that the Goa Police doesn’t hesitate to walk, with impunity, over women’s chests and use lathis against their own fellow Goans who protest without violence for valid reasons, but do not act when assaults  occur. Goa may be a holiday destination, but both the DGP and the IGP must understand that they are not here on a holiday, but getting hefty salaries and hence need to act, without being tools in the hands of their masters.

We have enough stooges to follow the diktats of the Government, even when they go against their conscience, but let the Government please keep their hands off the Educational Institutions.
