Holiness Entails Action

Molly Fernandes

From the beginning God is seen as compassionate in support of his creation at different intervals through various ways, through his anointed - the Fathers of Faith, Judges, Kings, Prophets, Calamity, Circumstances and Devastation too. In the end through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. Jesus who left His imprints handing over His mission to his chosen disciples, one of whom He designated as the First Bishop of the Church. Down the ages till date, the Church of Christ follows the Magisterium and adheres to its teaching that comes through His Holiness in the form of Apostolic Exhortations, Encyclicals, Homily, and Message for special occasions. His Holiness Pope Francis has made a clarion call against growing violence…, to all through his latest Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete Et Exsultate(GE) - Rejoice and be Glad, The  Call To Holiness. All we need is to follow his direction and achieve the goal.

Through His writings the Pope challenges to promote anew the desire for holiness. Yes, holiness perhaps in a practical way for our own life. “Be holy, for I am Holy” says the Lord in Lev. 11:44. Lord’s words to Abraham: “Walk before me, and be blameless” (Gen 17:1). St. Paul says:  For the Lord has chosen each one of us “to be holy and blameless before him in love” (Eph 1:4). The call to holiness is also rooted in the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church – Lumen Gentium, Ch.V article 40 and 41, to live a life of perfection to the fullest. Not by praying before the Blessed Sacrament, or any other externals rather “as Christ's faithful, using all the strength as given by Jesus in whatever state of life, a bishop, priest, religious, mother, father, youth, student, social worker, whatever be the conditions, duties and circumstances of their lives”.

While the Pope too expresses the same sentiments: “To be holy does not require being a bishop, priest... That is not the case, he says. Are you called to the consecrated life? Be holy by living out your commitment with joy. Are you married? Be holy by loving and caring for your husband or wife, as Christ does for the Church. Do you work for a living? Be holy by labouring with integrity and skill in the service of your brothers and sisters. (GE. 14)

Yes, holiness entails action because Pope spells out clearly giving examples: “a woman goes shopping, she meets a neighbour and they begin to speak, and the gossip starts. But she says in her heart: “No, I will not speak badly of anyone”. God destined us in love to be blameless, holy, just as He is Holy.
