Victims and Victors

Joseph Lewis D’Silva

Poet Milton’s wife chided him saying, “Everyday you go for a walk, but what do you seek to gain from this? You can’t even see properly now.”

Milton replied, “Birds sing, winds play and caress me. In that fresh morning air when the dawn comes ..., it brings an untold beauty. I go to see that beauty.”

His wife said, “But you don’t have vision. How can you see beauty?”

Milton replied,” Beauty is not seen with external eyes. The eyes that see beauty are within us.”

Such is the case of many persons who are not able to take life’s hard knocks in their stride.

One should develop inward qualities and come out of the victim cocoon by seeing with their inner eyes, their own blessings.

A few victims, if they don't have something that the others have, they think low of themselves, although, they are not. For example a woman indulging in comparison said: “I feel like a loser on seeing that everyone else is doing amazing things with their lives. I don’t have a job. Some have purchased new flats.” She thought if she gets certain things she would be happy.

Most of us understand the foolishness of comparing oneself to others; besides, there are always people who “appear” to be better off than anyone. One, who stops comparing self with others, saves precious time and is able to live life fully with joy and happiness and thus becomes a victor.

Some become victim of social conditioning of people who are jealous; who think that others are doing better than them. They push people, of weak mindset, down the platform of success with garbage like ideas, in order to pitch themselves high up. Those who play in the hands of ill-will individuals, end up with wrong conclusion and turn out to be victims; as their way of thinking  cannot make rules for themselves, so they follow the rules given by others.

This reminds me of washer-man’s donkey which fell in a pit. “The washer-man decided to bury it in that hole by throwing mud on it and filling the ditch, as the donkey was old and useless to him then. The mud the farmer and his friends threw fell on the donkey’s back. It shook the dirt off and climbed on top of the mud pile and thus climbed out of the pit.” In the same way if people throw useless ideas in one’s mind, shake off useless views, and like the donkey, become a victor.

Negativity turns one into a victim. A negative person can have the best of things and still be miserable. It all depends on one’s attitude, for example: “A drunkard father had two sons. When they were interviewed, the younger son said, “I became like this because of my father, who created a bad atmosphere at home”. The elder son said, “I give credit to my drunken father for my success and the unhappy home atmosphere. I was determined to be different.” The situation was the same, and the response, different. It is one’s negative response to situations that makes one a victim and a positive reaction makes one a victor.

Life is not fair, e.g, Helen Keller, though disabled, was a great social worker. We do not know why life is not fair. But if one bears, life’s difficulties, he is the one who becomes a victor.
