Windows. Apparently just a thing for granted. But actually it's significance in life remain simply immeasurable.
Let's take the case of trains. Right from my childhood, windows hold a special dimension for me during railway journey. A seat by the window --- it seems that the world has been conquered! Apart from geographical delights like rivers, mountains or forests, windows remain a gateway to the world passing by. Not to speak of the knowledge garnered about the architectural design of the rural dwellings or the typical attire of the people of the region concerned. Indeed windows play a great role in imparting education to the inquisitive fellow while moving in transport.
Then windows of hotels form an indispensable part of tourism for the serious tourist out to explore a new place. So after going through the usual tourism circuit of visiting particular sites or roaming around the streets, a glance of the life outside through the hotel window is also no less enlightening. While the vast valley of Paro graced with white choertens below and monasteries high above the ranges was transmitting a soothing feeling directly to my hotel bed thanks to the window, the window at Pokhara was helping me to see the life of the Nepalese city moving at its own pace by the majestic Phewa Lake!
Windows also serve as a spice in otherwise mundane life. After negotiating the chaos and turbulence of Central Kolkata, office is reached through the same route year after year. More or less the same job continues to get performed. Inspite of such monotony, the series of windows in our 6th floor office used to provide a significant amount of relief. The clouds of various shapes and hues dominating the Kolkata skyline, the blue sky over the historic Indian Museum, a sudden burst of rainfall rendering the Howrah Bridge out of sight within seconds, a pigeon or a crow flying from nowhere and monitoring our work --- indeed what a colourful world gets gifted by the windows! But just to appear like a Corporate office, our vast open office space got fragmented into several cubicles and the windows got sealed for installation of AC machines landing us in a dark confined blackhole of sorts rendering the office to a very repulsive place as the windows have been practically snatched from me.
A peep outside our residence through the window simply create a magic. Mentally fatigued after performing any household chore! Just a cursory glance outside and the mind gets refreshed through the sight of mango orchard, play of birds and squirrel, ducks and kingfisher displaying their acrobatics in water. This break from monotony certainly presents a new energy in life.
Not only literally, but the unseen window within our minds should also be meticulously kept open as advised by all the leading lights of civilization. Apart from letting in the liberal thoughts and greatness embedded in all cultures around the globe, we should also make our own conclusion about any affair without mortgaging our God-awarded intellect to the "mainstream" or media by utilising the light of logic entering our minds through the window of reasoning.
“Open the window of your mind. Allow the fresh air, new lights and new truths to enter” --- let this statement of author Amit Ray remain our inspiration of life.
