Do campaigns really help in curbing crimes?

Zeba Khan Pathan

I appreciate the efforts and initiative taken by the Goa police by organising a special drive campaign with a motive to stop drunken driving.

Alcohol is the root cause and mother of all evils. We have witnessed thousands of crimes taking place in Goa under the influence of alcohol. These crimes are at a rise every year. Goa being a tourist spot needs to preserve its identity and as Goans it is our duty to safeguard Goan identity.

The special drive by Goa police on August 10, 2018 somewhere proved to be a hindrance for the common public.

Students travelling to university and colleges, working public, people who were supposed to fly out of country and people in need of medical aid and emergency fell prey to the traffic. Thus the decision of the special drive seemed not to be in public interest.

The only way to actually stop drunken driving is to ban the use of alcohol. Goa has more bars than hospitals and funeral grounds.

Anything that causes chaos and destruction should be stopped immediately.

Recently, a famous restaurant in Goa announced the happy opening of bar in its restaurant and claims to have got licence in hands.

It also promises visitors to entertain and serve a memorable experience, under the hashtags#Truespirit#Goanspirit.

Moreover beer competitions are held wherein people are encouraged to booze even more.

With this being the scenario in Goa, I wonder how far the "Drunken Driving" campaign will be successful.

If the authorities are really concerned about people who drink and drive, then the only way to stop this is to curb the use of alcohol. For when the root of crimes and chaos is uprooted there will be no space for crimes and accidents.

If the same zeal is shown to prevent and detect crimes in Goa the citizens would be more than happy.

Goa Police’s intentions maybe good but the pro alcohol policies pursued by the government will make their task of curbing drunken driving near to impossible.
