Rights were approved by District Level Committee

MARGAO: For the first time since the enactment of the Forest Rights Act in 2016, 17 families from Canacona and Sanguem talukas will get their rights following the approval of their claim by the District Level Committee headed by Collector Anjali Sherawat on Thursday.

Following the recommendation of the respective Sub-District Level Committees the District Level Committee approved the 17 cases of which 14 were from Maulingem in Sanguem talukas and three from Gaondongrim in Canacona taluka.

One of the conditions to get Forest Rights is that 50 per cent of the Gram Sabha has to resolve to grant the rights to the forest dwellers. However, in Goa the attendance for gram sabhas usually does not even constitute the quorum which is one-tenth of the gram sabha members.

However, the Collector initiated a movement including all government officials including the deputy collector, mamlatdar, panchayat secretary, Block Development Officer, etc and ensured that 2000 people attended the special gram sabha at Gaondongrim panchayat held on January 26, 2018 which was 50 per cent of the population and it was resolved to grant Forest Rights to around 300 families in the village.

The Deputy Collector Canacona was entrusted with the task of processing the 300 claims made by the villagers for Forest Rights at the Gaondongrim gram sabha of which three were completed and taken up for consideration yesterday and those three families will not get their Forest Rights.

The work done by Anjali in granting Forest Rights to people living in forest areas has been exemplary and was appreciated by Bailancho Ekvott by presenting her an appreciation certificate recently.
