Martins appealed all Goans to attend the function in large numbers and pay tributes to those Cuncolkars, who laid down their lives for the Mother land.
In 1583, Cuncolkars waged war against Portuguese rule to preserve their land and pride.
It was the first revolt in India against any foreign rule. The Portuguese called the Chieftains of Cuncolim at Assolna fort for a peace treaty and killed 15 of them. One of them managed to escape.
