PANJIM: Stating that action has been initiated against an officer of Civil Supplies Department for having, in the past, issued a ration card to a foreign national in Mapusa, Civil Supplies Minister Govind Gaude said the department is collecting data to analyse such cases.

Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference at Kala Academy, Gaude said the department was getting information of bogus ration cards being issued and reasons why the exercise has been initiated.

“It was an incident of the past that a foreigner was found with a ration card. After obtaining information, action was also taken against the concerned officers involved in it and the ration card has been cancelled. Currently 67 per cent of the data collection has been completed and rest will be done shortly,” the Minister said.

He said that once the data has been fed, the department will analyse and cross check the genuineness of the ration cards.

The Minister said the department is also verifying cases of Goans who had opted for Portuguese citizenship and still did not get their ration cards cancelled. He said that many such cases have been found in Salcete where ration cards have not been cancelled after the person adopted citizenship of other countries.
