PANJIM: With Atanasio Monserrate set to replace the Panjim Mayor, the opposition is still undecided on whether to file a nomination or not.

Speaking to Herald, former BJP Mayor Shubham Chodankar said that a meeting is yet to held to decide to discuss the issue and take a decision. He said that being the opposition panel at the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) the BJP may file a nomination.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a corporator said everything will depend on Monserrate’s future in the Greater Panjim PDA. He said that if Monserrate doesn’t stay with the government than anything could happen.

In the last Mayoral election BJP had fielded Rupesh Halarnkar but this time the nominee may be Chodankar or Vaidehi Naik, both former Mayors. BJP may also look at Pundlik Raut, who is senior in party but a first time corporator.

The 2016 corporation elections saw the Monserrate-backed panel win 17 of the 30 wards. The BJP-backed panel was forced to sit in the opposition with 13 councillors. The one year term of Mayor Surendra Furtado and Deputy Mayor Lata Parekh ends in March.

Monserrate had earlier said Furtado has been Mayor for four years and there will be a new mayoral candidate this time. He did not disclose the possible names for the post, but sources revealed that Uday Madkaikar could be the candidate.
