VASCO: The Vasco police on Saturday evening arrested a woman from Baina on charges of detaining and assaulting minor girls in her flat at Baina.
Police informed that they received a phone call from PCR Panjim about some minor girls detained in a flat at Baina. Thus a police team led by Ritesh Tari along with a volunteer from NGO Childline proceeded to the flat and found eight minor girls (seven 12-year-old girls and one 11-year-old girl) residing there.
On questioning, six of them disclosed that they were victims of assault by the caretaker namely Venus Habib. Subsequently, the victim girls and the accused woman were brought at the Vasco police station. Later, the NGO Childline volunteer lodged a formal complaint against the accused woman and helped the police to record the statement of victim girls.
The incident came to light when the minor girls had visited a church in Vasco and some locals noticed that they were having burn marks on their hand. After member of public questioned them, one of the minor girls disclosed about the torture faced by them. Subsequently, a phone call was made to NGO Childline and they intimated to the police. Later, police took the minor girls for medical check up and they were lodged at Apna Ghar.
Meanwhile, police have started collecting the details of the parents the victim girls and the purpose for keeping them in the flat.
The accused woman Habib is booked and arrested under Sections 363 (kidnapping), 324 (assault) and Section 8 of Goa Children’s Act.
Police have also sealed both the flats that were used by the accused woman to detain the minor girls. Later on Sunday Vasco police produced accused woman before Vasco JMFC who remanded in police for four days.
