Says not enough speed gadgets available in Goa; Feels Goa needs no speed governors and the state is not adamant over their implementation and will do the needful if Centre gives powers to State

PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured the taxi operators that they will be given more time to install speed governors as there were not enough speed gadgets available in Goa.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference at his official residence after the taxi operators called off their three-day long strike, he however said that the State Government is of view that speed governors are not required for tourist taxis in Goa and added that the State will move the Supreme Court of India in this regard.

It may be recalled that the tourist taxi operators had called for a strike to oppose the directive to install speed governors by February 28, failing which the Transport Department would not issue fitness certificates to them.

Speaking further, Parrikar said, “The State Government’s view is that speed governors are not required for the tourist taxis in Goa. We will file an intervention petition in the Supreme Court, which is currently hearing a petition on the implementation of speed governors”.

“It is my personal view that speed governors are not required in Goa at least but it does not matter as far as law is concerned”, he said.

The Chief Minister said the State is not adamant over the implementation of speed governors and added that he will do the needful if Central government gives powers to the State.

“To be frank, we are not convinced that 80-km speed limit could change any situation in Goa at least, I personally feel that the limit should have been at least 100 kms”, he said.

“I personally feel that taxis in Goa are not involved in too many accidents. The rate of accidents is very less in which taxis are involved,” he said.

He said the Government will ask the Central government to grant the authority to the State under Section 110 (III) (B) of Central Motor Vehicle Act as required speed governors are not available.

“It is not an exemption, this is only to give more time beyond February 28 to install speed governors”, Chief Minister said.
