CANSAULIM: NGOs, citizens and leaders of political parties under a banner “Goans Against Coastal Regulation Zone 2018” on Wednesday protested the MoEF’s draft CRZ notification 2018 near Matanhy Saldanha’s statue at Cansaulim.

After garlanding the Matanhy’s statue, social and political leaders at the meeting expressed their opposition to the draft CRZ notification 2018.

Goans for Goa convener, Kennedy Afonso called upon all Goans to unite against the notification, while Goenchea Ramponkaracho Ekvott (GRE) president Agnelo Rodrigues reminded everyone of Matanhy’s struggle to protect the environment and the fishing community.

Congress spokesperson Sidhanath Buyao questioned the silence of MLAs and party leaders, who claim to be protectors of Goenkarponn.

Dr Francisco Colaco claimed that the draft notification is an outrage and affront on all Goans and aims to promote builders and industries.

“It is being enforced without any consultation with stakeholders. Besides great damage to the fishermen and tourism, it will result in complete erosion of our beautiful coastline”, he warned.

GRE general secretary Olencio Simoes claimed that the Government is yet to mark the hazard line.

“Baina houses were demolished years ago claiming that they were in danger of being close to the coast but now this draft notification will allow development closer within 50 metres”, he said.

He said that the 2011 CRZ Notification was brought to protect the coast but now they are reducing the NDZ.

Valmiki Naik of Aam Aadmi Party claimed that the CM is back to ensure Goa will be destroyed. “Aam Aadmi Party promises to stand with the people”, he said .

Congress party’s Sankhap Amonkar claimed that this draft notification will not benefit fishermen but will only promote the industry. “Keep the notification in abeyance and let there be a discussion in the Assembly”, he demanded.

Social activist and historian, Prajal Sakhardande said, “Let’s send a strong signal that Goenkars are united in opposing the draft CRZ notification”.

After the meeting, the crowd moved to Cansaulim Beach and planted a coconut sapling signifying the beginning of the campaign.

The next protest will be held on Friday on Miramar beach at 4 pm.
