CHINCHINIM: Besides objecting to the development of a coal hub in Goa and inclusion of six Goan rivers in the scheduled of national waterways, the Chinchinim Deussua gram sabha today also objected to the widening of the National Highway No. 17 passing through their village.

At the gram sabha today attended by around 90 villagers, when the resolution to object to the development of coal hub and the inclusion of Goan rivers in the national waterways schedule was raised the Deputy Sarpanch Valentino Barreto referring to the Chief Minister’s statement on the matter in the assembly suggested that the villagers give the chief minister time to fulfill his promise.

However, the villagers insisted on adopting the resolution as most other panchayats had taken a similar resolution. “What is the harm in adopting the resolution as yet another villager objecting to these two points,” asked one villager following which the two resolutions were adopted.

Valentino suggested adopting a resolution objecting to the widening of the National Highway No. 17 as it would involve demolishing of houses and compound walls. He pointed out that some years before the gram sabha had adopted a similar resolution and added that at the moment another resolution was necessary as there are fresh plans to widen the highway.

The villagers unanimously adopted the resolution and suggested that instead of widening the existing National Highway No 17, the government think of some other alternative including a bypass or a parallel highway at some other place.

The gram sabha also resolved that the panchayat meet the Parish Priest and the School management for a proper plan to avoid vehicles parking near the school gate to drop children thereby causing traffic jams.

It was even suggested that the space opposite the church near the Statue of St. Judas be used to part vehicles while the parents walk their children to the school nearby.

The panchayat assured to inform the villagers at the next gram sabha how many conductors in the village have been replaced following a discussion on the Electricity Department installing new electricity poles instead of replacing the damaged ones.

The panchayat informed that the Electricity Department engineer was invited for the gram sabha but did not turn up and promised to try and get him to attend the next gram sabha to hear people’s complaints.

It was also resolved to ask for widening of the road connecting the Dandevaddo junction to the Chinchinim church junction.

The Gram Sabha also resolved to ensure that all the mobile towers are fitted with lightning conductors, complain to the department about the irregular attendance of the Anganwadi in charge, licensed handcarts in the village, taking up fire prevention measures and also constitute the vigilance committee.
