Hand over memorandum; Want the Opposition leader to intervene
CURCHOREM/margao: Over 200 permanent employees of Chowgule Costi mines called on Opposition leader and Quepem MLA Chandrakant (Babu) Kavalekar at Curchorem on Monday and submitted a memorandum urging him to intervene in the matter to solve the issue of retrenchment of workers.
It may be recalled that the Supreme court had quashed all the 88 iron ore Mine Leases in Goa with effect from March 16, 2018 vide its judgement which brought all the mining activities to a grinding halt.
The employees of Chowgule mines have alleged that the company had immediately started removing its employees after the stoppage of mining operations in Goa.
The employees urged Kavalekar to intervene and request the management not to take the harsh decision of terminating or retrenching workers who have worked in the mine for several years.
They also requested him to support them get financial help from the government for the retrenched employees as their families would also be affected due to drastic action of the company.
"Most employees are under pressure due to the reduction of manpower and everyone is thinking how to survive, how to continue their children's education and how to repay the loan availed from the banks/societies," they stated in the memorandum.
Assuring full cooperation, Kavalekar said it would be a great injustice to workers if the company retrenched them.
"I will speak with the management, as I know the company is also facing difficulties due to closures of mines. We are trying to restart mining activities with government support and till than the company must protect them," he said.
Kavalekar urged the management to reconsider their decision and retain the employees till the mining issue was solved.
