Churchill said that the Supreme Court order on speed governors was pronounced in 1989 and it was not applicable to tourist taxis.

MARGAO: Nationalist Congress Party MLA Churchill Alemao while complimenting Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for resolving the tourist taxi owners issue recalled that he has always been championing the cause of Goans in the tourism trade right from 1989.

He appreciated the manner in which the tourist taxi owners treated him when he visited them at Azad Maidan where they were agitating. “I was the first MLA to visit them and told them that I do not want to indulge in politics and they gave me a very warm response,” he said.

He pointed out that local Goans can be found only amongst the tourist taxi owners and shack owners while all other businesses in the State are taken over by corporate houses who are also promoting tour operators now.

Pointing out that the Supreme Court order on speed governors was pronounced in 1989, he said it was applicable only to commercial vehicles like trucks and buses and was not applicable to tourist taxis. “Even though the notification on speed governors was published in 2016 no State has implemented it as yet and why should Goa be the only state to do so?” he asked.

Pointing out that 10 years back he had stopped installation of meters on taxis, he said he would always stand by the taxi owners in their struggle.
