PANJIM: The State Transport Authority (STA) of the Transport Department, which is scheduled to meet on January 9, is likely to clear the rent-a-cab service in the State.

Rent-a-cab operators who are awaiting this decision told Herald that they have fulfilled the terms and conditions laid down by Transport Department and under the MV Act.

“Currently there are 133 rent-a-car permits given by the government in the State and there won’t be any other reason to reject permission. We have fulfilled the conditions and are waiting a new year gift from the government,” an operator said. The last STA meeting on December 27, 2017 was inconclusive on rent-a-car services.

The issue of granting rent-a-cab permissions to 861 cabs was held up due to legal tangles and protests from taxi operators in the State. The matter was later taken to the High Court, and in December last year the government lifted the moratorium on rent-a-cab services and submitted an affidavit to that effect to the HC. The High Court had also directed the State to follow the Central Government MV Act.

The North Goa Rent-a-Car Association (NGRCA), a body of private vehicle owners, had approached the High Court in July last, seeking directions to the government to grant them licences under the rent-a-cab scheme.

There are 133 rent-a-cars plying in the State, and over 863 more are waiting for a decision from the government.
