MARGAO: The Congress delegation on Thursday met the Civil Registrar Domingos Martins at Margao and complained of the unconditional delay in issuing birth certificates.

The Congress came with some receipts issued with a post date of nearly 4 months for issuance of certificates.

The Civil Registrar cited staff crunch as the reason for the delay in issuing birth certificates.

Siddhanath Buyao, Pratima Coutinho, Piedade Noronha and several others met the Civil Registrar.

Buyao said, "The lack of staff and the Civil Registrar’s written request to the government to increase the staff strength falling on the Ministry’s deaf ears confirm that the department and government are incompetent".

"There are 200 people standing in a queue here daily. Senior citizens especially women standing in a line with no certificate issued is a sad reality of how Goans have been troubled", claimed Pratima Coutinho.

The people and Congress representatives demanded that the office needs to increase the staff strength to solve the problem.  They said the section, which is working with only 2 staff needs to be strengthened.

Martins said, "I had written to the department in January for increasing the staff strength. I have not received any sanction till date".

The Congress and the people demanded a solution to the problem immediately failing which they threatened to intensify their protest.
