CANACONA: Dumane locals staying in the vicinity of a garbage treatment plant knocked on the door of their MLA over issues they were facing.

The residents of about 100 households, accompanied by the local MLA Isidore Fernandes called on the chief officer of Canacona municipality over pollution and health hazards caused in the locality due to dumping and untreated wet and dry waste at the treatment plant.

They alleged that the garbage collected from households and commercial establishments is being constantly dumped for the past five years without complying to the standard practices. They said that this has affected the ground water quality, toxic waste mixing into the river and a host of other health issues for humans, wild life and vegetation in the area.

Chief Officer of Canacona municipality Raju Desai after listening to their grievances told the aggrieved residents that leached powder will be sprayed on the garbage dump and after segregation will be shifted to the Saligao treatment plant for which a proposal is sent to DMA he said.
