File recovered in Taxation Officer’s cupboard

MARGAO: The file pertaining to the fence erected around Margao Municipal Council garden which was reportedly missing since the last six months, was found early morning following a Herald report in its Wednesday’s edition.

The file was found in Taxation Officer Abhay Rane’s cupboard this morning even though he asserted that it was not there when he had checked earlier. According to him, since his cupboard is not locked anybody could have kept the file there on Tuesday after he left his cabin.

It would be pertinent to note that in June 2016, the taxation department had issued a show cause notice to Multipurpose Industrial Services Advertisements and Events to pay a little over Rs 4.5 lakh which were due to the council. Although the file tracking indicated that the file was in the administration section, it was not found and on Tuesday evening, the new Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes had directed the Taxation Department to search the file and had even threatened to lodge a police complaint in this regard. Probably, fearing a police probe, the file returned surreptitiously.

Significantly, many other files, which were reported missing, have been found since the MMC Technical Section was changed last month.

MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai expressed happiness that the file has been found.

“At least now we shall be able to put to rest the matter finally,” she said keeping her aim on the recovery of dues.
