Foundation stone laid for fish market complex at Fatorda

MARGAO: Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardessai on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for the Rs 12.89 crore wholesale fish market complex at Fatorda in the presence of GSIDC Chairman Deepak Pauskar, Vice Chairman Sidharth Kunkoklienkar, MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai and SGPDA Chairperson Dr Renuka da Silva and many councilors.

The whole sale fish market will have two distinct sections, one for the inter-state vendors and the other for intra-state vendors. While there will be 26 waiting bays for the inter-state vendors in the shed for intra state vendors there will be 64 waiting bays divided in two distinct area probably for the ramponkars and trawler owners.

In the first phase, which is estimated to cost around Rs 86 lakh, only the compound wall for the 10,000 sq mts of land and its leveling will be taken up while the actual construction of the market will commence in the second phase.

Chirag Jain of UCJ Architecture & Environment gave a power point presentation of the project as it is being conceptualised and admitted that various models of how the fish vending area and the floor above that would be utilised is still being considered and the final one is yet to be decided upon.

Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardessai recalled how the wholesale market was shifted overnight in 2003 with the help of his friend M M Ibrahim and apologised to the people of Madel who had to suffer for the last 15 years not only the stink generated by the market but also the din of the trucks coming early in the morning at 3.30.

Acknowledging that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar demoted himself from the Defense Ministry for Goan fish, he said the only wholesale fish market in Goa which is in Margao would be a good one where there would be no stink anymore.

The wholesale fish market is being constructed by Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation and will be ready in one year said its chairman Deepak Pauskar.

While MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai welcomed the gathering SGPDA Chairperson Dr Renuka da Silva proposed the vote of thanks.
