Leaves it to Central Ministry to grant permission to re-development of cargo berths, capital dredging at port

PANJIM: Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) has decided to recommend the proposed re-development of cargo berths at Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) and capital dredging activities to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) for a further decision on granting permissions under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). The decision was taken at a recent meeting of thee authority.

In August last year GCZMA had received a proposal for the re-development of cargo berths at Mormugao on PPP basis. MPT has submitted the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study report for re-development of Berth 8, 9 & Barge Berth.

MPT had also submitted the proposal for the proposed deepening of approach channel and inner basin for capesize vessels at the port, the EIA for which has been conducted.

GCZMA had earlier roped in Central Water And Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune and Chennai-based National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) to conduct a detailed study on the impact to the shoreline due to capital dredging activities.

The decision has been taken pursuant to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order wherein it directed GCZMA to carry out a study on the possible impact or erosion.
