PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) decided to grant conditional Consent to Operate under the Air Act and Water Act to 21 iron ore mining leases for a period till March 2018.

The 21 mining leases belongs to Panduronga Timblo Industries (four leases), Sesa Resources Ltd (three leases), Chowgule and Company Pvt Ltd (two leases) and one each of Vedanta Ltd, Haider Kassim Khan, Eyestar Finance & Leasing Pvt Ltd, Timblo Pvt Ltd, RS Shetye, Kunda Gharse, Sociedade Timblo Irmaos Limitada, VG Quenim, Rajesh Timblo, Polo Dongor Iron ore mines, MS Talaulikar & Sons and Orasso Dongor Iron ore mines.

“The Board members decided to grant conditional consent with monitoring of Air Ambient Quality (AAQ) parameters till March 2018,” the minutes of the meeting state. The Board directed the mines department to regulate the mining transport.  Of the 21 mining leases, it noted that 11 mines exceeded the AAQ PM10 limit for November and December 2017, whereas in case of the other 10 leases, the AAQ parameters were within the limits. These 10 leases failed to comply with the plan of action regarding short term and medium term measures as directed by the Board.

Hence, these ten leases have been directed to submit a bank guarantee to the Board within 15 days of grant of consent. The Board decided to monitor the AAQ thrice a week.

“The Board decided that with adequate measures to contain pollution on transportation routes to be adopted, like water sprinkling on the routes, road clearing, wheel washing mechanism, road shoulders to be tarred, pollution will in fact reduce,” the minutes added.
