PANJIM: Bringing cheer to thousands of government employees on the eve of Dussehra, the government announced a hike in the dearness allowance (DA) to its employees and those in grant-in-aid institutes from October, along with payment of pending arrears from July.

The Central Government enhanced DA to its employees from the existing 4 percent to 5 percent of the basic pay per month, with effect from July 1, 2017.

“It has been decided by the State government to extend to its employees and employees of grant-in-aid educational institutions, the benefit of payment of DA at revised rates as sanctioned to central government employees,” the memorandum issued by Under Secretary Finance (exp) Sushama Kamat, states.

The hike in DA will be applicable to only those employees, whose basic pay scale is below Rs 4600 per month. “The enhanced DA would be paid to the employees along with salaries for the month of October, with arrears from the month of July to September,” she said.

Currently the government spends around Rs 80 crore a month on payments and pension of its employees, which are over one lakh in number.

The DA continues to be a distinct element of remuneration and will not be treated as pay within the ambit of FR9 (21). The revised hike by Central government is as per the VII Pay Commission recommendations.
