Greens highlight coal pollution at Vasco float parade
Participants of the crowd funded float made by anti-coal activists vent out their anger against the establishment for promoting coal in Goa
VASCO: While thousands of revellers filled the streets of Vasco on Monday to witness the colourful Carnival float parade, the anti-coal activists other green activists from Goa gabbed the opportunity and highlighted the issue of coal pollution in Vasco through their float.
The crowd funded float made by anti-coal activists had a musical troupe onboard and thorough their songs, music and dance the participants indeed vent out their anger against the establishment for promoting coal in Goa.
Meanwhile the Vasco carnival float parade was flagged off near St Andrew’s Church Square and passed through the Swatantra Path. Justice Shantanu Kemkar from Bombay High Court who was the chief Guest for the function flagged off the parade in presence of Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida.
A total of 64 floats in different categories, including clubs and institution (7), traditional (14), clown and jokers (23), fun and junk car (6), family and sponsors (14 floats) participated. A float by the Goa Police created awareness on safety, security and traffic rules among the citizens with an appeal to the citizens to join them as traffic sentinel, while the Indian Navy float depicted all its three dimensions.
“Through our float we are actually showcasing the combat potential of Indian Navy. Our floats were planned to depict all the three dimensions of Indian Navy including underwater, aircraft carrier and air arm,” Capt Rishi Menon, Naval float incharge informed Herald.
Even other floats had some or the other message for the citizens such as ‘Beti Bachao’, ‘Save our marine life’, ‘Stop mining loot in Goa’, ‘Save trees-save future’, ‘Ills of gambling in society’, ‘Sea is not junkyard save it’, ‘Free caged birds as sky is theirs’ etc.
After the float parade, there was a musical performance besides other cultural events for the citizens. This was for the first time the Vasco Carnival Committee had also organised various events across Mormugao taluka and for those who were unable to attend the float parade or are out of state, a live stream on YouTube and Facebook was hosted. At some points. the overhead wires on Swantantrapath lane forced the float participants to face some inconvenience. Taking cognizance of the same the Vasco Carnival Committee has decided to hold next year’s float parade on FL Gomes Road in Vasco.
“Due to Various reasons we have decided to hold next year’s carnival float parade on F L Gomes Road. This year we saw how overhead wires were creating obstructions to the movement of floats, similarly we had received a request from Murgao Hindu Samaj requesting us to shift the venue as carnival float parade take place on Monday when large number of devotees comes to visit Dev Damodar temple. Hence considering all views, we have decided to hold carnival as well as Sigmotsav float parade on F L Gomes Road,” Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida said.
