Monday sees no municipal team member in the town to penalise vendors; Number of people registering with the council to distribute plastic bags above 50 microns increases

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) seems to have slacked its drive against plastic bags as on Monday none of the municipal team members visited the town to penalise vendors using plastic bags.

But on the contrary the number of people registering with the council to distribute plastic bags above 50 microns has been increasing.

It may be recalled that MMC had launched a drive against vendors using plastic bags on April 2nd and 3rd and had collected Rs 73,000 by fining 86 persons for violations. While the fish vendors were given time till this month-end to use plastic bags the other vendors were asked to either use paper or cloth bags.

However, since the MMC staff did not carry out any inspections on  April 4 and 5, plastic carry bags made their way back in the markets and following this Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai sent an emergency team to survey the entire market area on April 6.

However, on Monday none of officials of the MMC went out to check if plastic bags were being used by the vendors. However, the chairperson is learnt to have issued an order late evening directing some MMC staff to inspect at least the market areas daily regarding the use of plastic bags.

Meanwhile, nine traders have registered with MMC to be permitted to hand out plastic bags above 50 microns to their customers. While some have registered for the full year by paying Rs 48,000, others have registered for only a month till they exhaust their stock.
