PANJIM: Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo has demanded that the government officially declare January 16 as Opinion Poll Day.

PANJIM: Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo has demanded that the government officially declare January 16 as Opinion Poll Day.

“Government should officially declare January 16 as the Opinion Poll Day. It should be given status and honour, which hasn’t been done by any government so far,” Lobo said, on the sidelines of the Goa Legislators’ Day function at Porvorim on Tuesday.

He urged that all government and educational institutions observe Opinion Poll Day without it being declared a State holiday. The Calangute MLA also sought the installation of a statue of the Father of Opinion Poll Dr Jack de Sequeira in the Assembly complex.

Town & Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai had made a similar demand last week, asking that the Opinion Poll be made a part of the curriculum. Goa Forward Party will also observe ‘Opinion Poll Day’ on January 16.

Many former MLAs who attended the Goa Legislators’ Day function sought that Jack de Sequeira be honoured on January 16. A former MLA remarked that Goa would not have had its independent identity if it had merged with Maharashtra.
