Babush indicates it is time for a change since Surendra Furtado has been in place for 4 years
With the city Mayoral elections scheduled for March 15, Panjim is set to get a new mayor. Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate, who heads the ruling panel of the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP), has confirmed he will replace the mayoral candidate.
The 2016 corporation election saw Atanasio Monserrate-backed panel sweeping the polls by winning 17 of the 30 wards. The BJP-backed panel was made to sit in the opposition with 13 councillors. The one year term of Mayor Surendra Furtado and Deputy Mayor Lata Parekh end in March.
Speaking to Herald, Monserrate said, “Surendra Furtado has been the Mayor of CCP for four years and definitely there will be a new mayor candidate this time. It is time for a change. I have not had any meetings with the Mayor but for sure there will be a new face this time.”
The change of guard will be effective from next month after the elections for the post of mayor and deputy mayor are conducted, as per the CCP Act. While there is no provision of voting out a mayor through a no-confidence motion, elections are held every year to elect a new mayor and deputy mayor besides CCP committees.
Monseratte, however, did not disclose the possible names for the post but sources revealed Deputy Mayor Lata Parekh and Councillor Uday Madkaikar would hold the flag.
As per reliable sources, the Councillor and close aid of Monseratte, Uday Madkaikar is a strong contender to head the corporation. On the other hand, for the post of deputy Mayor it is likely that Lata Parekh, wife of former Mayor Yatin Parekh will retain the post, even though she is facing a tough fight from Rahul Lotlikar a newly elected corporator.
“I cannot comment on it on who will be the next mayor as we have not held any meeting with our panel leader. As still there is time for the elections the meeting will soon be taken and then it would be decided. I am ready to take any responsibility which is given to me by our head” said CCP Councillor Uday Madkaikar.
“There are still 40 days left. Babush is the leader of our group so let him decide. He has the full right to decide, who am I to decide, he is the main leader of our group. He will decide whom he wants to put where and I have no problem in that,” Furtado said, reacting to the news.
He added, “If somebody is a better choice than me then they are most welcome, I do not have any issue or any problem.”
It may be recalled that Police had registered a case against the CCP Councillor Uday Madkaikar for cheating a shop owner by first accepting money from him for allotting a shop in the Panaji municipal market and then giving it away to another person.
