People pay last respects to former Mapusa MLA Phyllis Faria; funeral today

MAPUSA: A large number of well-wishers and political leaders visited the residence of former MLA and a former Mapusa municipal chairperson Phyllis Faria to pay their last respects on Friday. Phyllis Faria died at Goa Medical College after a brief illness on Thursday. She was 93.

Phyllis Faria was nominated as a Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly 1985. In 1970 she was elected as a councillor of Mapusa Municipal Council and in 1973 she was elected as the president of the Mapusa Municipal Council, thus having the distinction and honour of being the first lady in Goa and in India to hold this distinguished post. She was also the President of North Goa Mahila Congress.

Speaking to Herald, former Speaker Surendra Shirsat said, “I have know her personally since she worked in our Dnynprasarak High School institute for quite a long time and when she became Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal council she had done a good job. Later, when she was nominated as MLA she to her capacity and we appreciate her. Overall she was a wonderful lady.”

Mapusa Congress block President Vijay Bhike said, “She was a kind lady and a well known person. Being one of the first women Congress leader, it’s a proud movement for us and difficult to find such political leader these days. She was not a greedy for power.”

In 1985, Phyllis Faria was nominated as Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly. The last rites of Phyllis Faria will take place on February 24 at 4 pm at St Jerome’s Church Mapusa.
