PANJIM: The State government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matka gambling cases. The team, formed following directions from the High Court, will be headed by Superintendent of Police Bossuet Silva. The SIT will be monitored by retired Justice A P Lawande.

According to an order from the Home Department, the team, besides Silva will consist of Police Inspector Krishna Sinari and two Police Sub-Inspectors.

Social activist Kashinath Shetye had approached the High Court of Bombay at Goa contending that Crime Branch, after registering an FIR in the matka gambling case, was reluctant to investigate the root of matka.

Shetye was pressing for the transfer of investigation to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He had alleged that Crime Branch was merely arresting small agents and had failed to trace the source of origin of matka numbers

Shetye had filed a PIL alleging that police and politicians were conniving with matka agents operating in Goa. Following the court’s direction, Crime Branch had registered an FIR against police, politicians and others.
