PANJIM: Stating that the party welcomes holding simultaneous polls to Legislative Assemblies along with the Lok Sabha, the Congress on Monday said the Central government will have to bring in a Constitutional amendment before proposing the same.
“Congress party is ever ready for simultaneous elections in Goa along with Lok Sabha polls. But there has to be a Constitutional amendment. Without that it would be ultra vires of the Constitution and will be struck down,” GPCC president Shantaram Naik said.
President Ram Nath Kovind, during his parliamentary address, had made a reference to holding simultaneous polls to State Legislative Assemblies along with the Lok Sabha.
“Let the experts draft a constitutional amendment, under which, simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and State Assemblies can be held, thereafter, only on the basis of such a draft, discussions should be held,” Naik said.
