A tribe of Langurs have wrecked havoc in Gogol. It is neither Diwali nor Christmas nor New year time, but since last month the residents of Gogol on the outskirts of Margao and surrounding areas are waking up to the deafening sounds of busting of gola bombs sometimes as early as 5.00 in the morning. This is an attempt to scare this tribe of Grey Langurs away who are creating havoc in the locality.
This tribe consists of one alpha male, four females and one young one, they have made the roof top of an educational institution at Gogol which gives them safety from predators a permanent home. They have been destroying agricultural plantations like mangoes, papayas, drum sticks, bananas that are grown in the backyards of their houses and other vegetables grown in open fields and terraces in the locality. There are also complaints from residents of breaking decorative roofings and damaging ornamental plants.Sources at the college said these langurs have destroyed their outdoor electrical fixtures and the complaints made by them to the forest department have not yielded any results. The issue was raised in the assembly and the forest minister of that time Rajendra Arlekar had assured that the process to identify birds and animals destroying crops had nothing has happened on this front. When this issue was brought to the attention of Jose Fernandes, councilor of the adjoining ward he said that till date no one had complained but since it had been bought to his notice he would ask the forest department to take action. Deputy conservator of Forest Mr. Anil Shet Gaonkar when informed about this menace he said that he will pass on the complaint to his subordinate for suitable action in this regards.
