PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has directed the District Collector to provide a new pipeline and 500 litres capacity water tank to every house in Pissurlem-Sattari through the District Mineral Fund. The court also directed that fields and lakes in the village be de-silted.

Pissurlem residents had filed a petition along with NGO Goa Foundation, seeking relief through the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) fund. The fund, set up in 2015 for the welfare of mining affected people, has remained unused.

In an affidavit filed before the Court in a PIL, Goa Foundation had said mining activities have taken a toll on agricultural and traditional water sources in the village that has a population of 3,500.

Pissurlem was self-sufficient with more than 30 functional wells. However, only 15 of these wells survive and are able to provide water during and immediately after the monsoon. They dry up during the mining season and in summer, the petition before the court stated.
