Advoi villagers allege the owner is working with the Excise Dept Goa and the activity is reportedly going on for five years
VALPOI: Following local villagers’ complaint, the Valpoi Excise Department has seized illegal and duplicate alcohol bottles, barrels, empty bottles, branded alcohol label stamps like McDonald, Royal Stag, Blender Pride, etc, worth over Rs 5 lakh at Advoi village, in Sattari on Tuesday.
According to villagers, the person who is producing the illegal and duplicate branded alcohol is reportedly working with the Excise Department, Goa, as an officer. The locals also claimed that he owns many illegal and duplicate alcohol making godowns in Advoi village.
“For the past five years, the illegal and duplicate branded alcohol is being produced in our village. They are making the duplicate branded alcohol, while using a concoction of spirit, gutter water and mixing the chemical colours with their hands,” said complainant Raghoba Desai from Advoi village. “They supply this illicit alcohol to the neighbouring states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, in Goa and even Punjab,” Desai alleged.
“The place, where this duplicate alcohol is being produced, belongs to me and I am the owner of that property. We had given that land to one Hanumant Desai for cultivating agricultural crops six years ago, with a mutual understanding. But when we came to know that there are illegal activities going on, we had questioned Hanuman Desai, but he threatened to kill us. I have informed the Valpoi police station and Exercise Department Valpoi,” said Raghoba.
All attempts to contact Hanuman Desai were in vain as his mobile was switched off.
“We have seized 77 boxes of Johnnie Walker whisky of 750 ml bottles capacity, fully packed and kept outside a godown under construction. The godown was sealed in the front of five witnesses. We had seen 18 blue barrels of 200 ml capacity inside the godown of which eight barrels were full. We cannot describe exactly the contents of the barrels. But we have taken samples and have sent them to the Food and Drugs office. The report will reveal to us the contents. Everything from production, brand and packing is completely illegal. The brand is not registered with the Excise Department of Goa,” said Amol Harwalkar, Excise Inspector, Valpoi.
Now as per the Commissioner’s instructions, they will take further course of action.
