PANJIM: Notwithstanding Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s assurance to resolve the mining crisis through the court, people dependent on the industry have decided to continue their sit-in protest until the government takes concrete steps to ensure resumption of iron ore mining activities in the State.

Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF) leaders said the government has been fooling them with vague assurances for the last four months but no concrete steps have been taken. “Let Nitin Gadkari say whatever he wants, we will continue our fight till mining activities starts,” they said.

For the last three months, the government has been struggling to file a review petition in Supreme Court, pleading for modification of the court order dated February 7, that quashed second renewals granted to 88 mining leases and directed the State and Centre to initiate process for issuing fresh leases.

Government is now contemplating filing an intervention application in Supreme Court to allow mining operations till 2020.
