MARGAO: Goa Forward Party President (GFP) Vijai Sardesai has written to the Chief Secretary over the bandaras constructed by the Karnataka government to divert water in the Mhadei basin.

“The State government should immediately investigate this and bring this to the notice of the Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal and Supreme Court,” Sardesai stated in the letter.

He further pointed out that environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar had recently highlighted how the Karnataka government had started the construction of bandaras on the Mhadei River with the intention of diverting the water outside the Mhadei basin into Karnataka.

“The actions of Karnataka pose a severe threat to the Mhadei River flowing through Goa. There is an urgent need to investigate the matter and bring this to the notice of the Tribunal and Supreme Court on priority,” Sardesai mentioned.

Vijai said that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had stated multiple times that Mhadei is much more than a mother to him and that we as Goans, believe that the Mhadei River is our lifeline.

“I request the government to act on a war footing basis by conducting an inspection immediately and taking necessary steps to prevent Karnataka from constructing the bandaras,” he added.
