The fishermen complain they were intruding into the jurisdiction of traditional fishermen and the absence of a system in place was galling

PANJIM: Large number of traditional fishermen from Siridao and adjoining areas met Fisheries Minister Vinod Paliencar on Thursday demanding ban on the canoes with purse seine fishing nets.

The group led by St Andre MLA Francis Silveira and Fr Valeriano Vaz alleged that traditional fishermen’s jurisdiction was being encroached into with no system in place to monitor the illegality.

“The issue was raised in the year 2014 before then Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado after which seven canoes were seized by the fisheries department. They were let off with a warning to not venture again where traditional fishermen have been operating. For some time, they stayed away but now they are back,” the MLA alleged.

Fr Vaz said that the purse seine net is to be used for trawlers more than five kms away from the coast. The traditional fishermen also detailed on how they are left without fish due to overexploitation of resources by canoes using purse seine net.

“They are not supposed to intrude in the territories where traditional fishermen have been operating. In another 2-3 years no fish will be left in the areas around Siridao because of the greed to have a big catch in short time,” Vaz warned.

Silveira said that the State government should work to ensure that there is no conflict between the two groups of fishermen in and around Siridao.

Speaking to reporters, the minister said that fisheries department is keeping a strict watch on such intrusions but due to lack of manpower and machinery, a full proof arrangement to monitor the illegalities cannot be worked out.
