PANJIM: Goa recorded its highest number of single-day deaths due to COVID-19 as 17 patients lost their lives due to the virus during the last 24 hours. As Goa reels under second wave, the positivity rate is also shooting up. 

Goa recorded 940 single-day spike in new COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours, second highest exactly a day after reporting highest ever 951 cases on Sunday. The positive rate has been recorded at 34.49 per cent. 

This takes the total active tally to 7545 with Goa recording a total 68,152 cases since the pandemic broke out last year. With 428 recoveries made in the last 24 hours, the total recovery figures are close to 60,000 at 59,705, as on Monday evening.The recovery rate is 87.61 percent. 

At least 24 places have reported active cases in three digits with Margao recording the largest 826 cases followed by Candolim 631 cases and Porvorim recording 581 cases. Vasco has 480 cases while Mapusa and Panjim have recorded 476 and 474 cases respectively. 

The total 900 deaths include 17 deaths reported during the last 24 hours. As per the Directorate of Health Services bulletin, 12 patients died at Goa Medical College and Hospital, three at South Goa District Hospital and one each at Hospicio and Asilo hospitals. 

Among the 17 deaths, a 19-year-old female from Kumarmat is the youngest with Type 1 respiratory failure. Two patients including the 19-year-old died within 24 hours of admission. The oldest deceased patient is a 89-year-old female from Sioliim with co-morbidity.
