193 candidates file nominations for five disputed councils on day two

PANJIM: A day after State Election Commission (SEC) resumed poll process in the five municipalities that are caught in litigations over ward reservations, 193 nominations were filed on Friday in these municipal councils, which are set to go for polls on March 21 taking the total to 208 nominations. 

Following relief from the Supreme Court in form of interim stay on High Court order on ward reservation and SEC’s order to keep in abeyance the polls, the election authority on Thursday issued notification resuming the election process and bringing into force the Model Code of Conduct with immediate effect in five municipalities- Margao, Mormugao, Quepem, Sanguem and Mapusa. 

A mad rush to file the nominations was witnessed at respective Deputy Collector’s offices, with last date of filing being Saturday. 

The election process in these five municipalities was halted on March 1. From February 25 to March 1, a total of 15 nominations were filed across all these municipal areas. 

On Friday, 67 nominations were filed in Mormugao, 42 in Quepem, 38 in Margao, 26 in Mapusa and 20 in Sanguem. 

Of the total 208 nominations filed, 178 are in South Goa while 30 in North. 

The scrutiny of the applications will take place on March 8 and the withdrawals, if any will take place on March 9.
