MAPUSA: Two undertrials escaped from the Modern Central Jail at Colvale on Friday evening.
The duo has been identified as Upendra alias Rupendra Naik (23), a native of Odisha and Hussain Kod (37) from Karnataka.
The incident came to light when jail authorities were undertaking a head count before sending the inmates back to their cells. The inmates as usual had been allowed to go around in the open space and the two undertrials were found missing during the head count, sources said.
Naik had been booked for murder in Porvorim police station in 2020, while, Kod was booked for raping a minor in Margao in 2018.
A police complaint has been filed by the jail authorities even as they suspect that the two inmates are hiding within the jail premises.
Recently there have been a number of escapes from the Colvale facility.
In December there was an attempt when a prisoner was being brought back from a hospital but by the end of the day the police had re-arrested the prisoner. In August last a prisoner had escaped while on garbage duty at Colvale Jail, and a month later another prisoner had gone missing from the jail.
