PANJIM: Accurate intelligence inputs led to Goa Police cracking a major ATM theft reported in the State. Three Bangladeshi Nationals were arrested by Delhi Police, in a joint operation of teams comprising Delhi’s Special Cell, North Goa District Police and Goa Crime Branch.

Mohd Safiq and Sofekul Mulla were arrested from Delhi Airport while they were trying to flee to Kolkata, whereas prime accused Rustam was arrested after a fierce shootout at Anant Vihar in Delhi on Wednesday night.

“We were on a lookout for the accused in the ATM burglary at Porvorim wherein approximately Rs 19 lakh, belonging to Union Bank of India, was looted by unidentified persons. Our team began to identify all possible accused based on the modus operandi. We first formed special teams of North Goa police officials and CB officials, who

decided to work together in this case. We shortlisted possible accused and on the basis of local inquiry, we zeroed-in on three accused,” an official said.

Soon thereafter, the teams coordinated with their counterparts in other States to locate whereabouts of the habitual offenders. Soon, their location was tracked in Delhi, which is when Delhi police had pitched in to assist the Goa Police.

“The first two persons were arrested by Delhi’s Special Cell at the airport while they were enroute to flee to Kolkata. On the basis of their interrogation the prime accused Rustam was tracked. A trap was laid to nab him and when he attempted to burglarise an ATM at Anant Vihar, the police surrounded him. Rustam tried to attack the police teams when he was shot on both his legs. He is seriously injured and undergoing treatment at the hospital there. All are arrested for the offence,” the officer said.

A Goa Police team will soon be leaving for Delhi to take custody of the three arrested accused, by when it is expected that the Delhi police team will complete their interrogation formalities in their case.
