PANJIM: That nursing is a noble profession was proven on Thursday when nearly 300 young women turned up at the Directorate of Health Services for a walk-in interview to work in the COVID hospital at Margao and be frontline COVID warriors.

Though 300 nurses appeared for the walk-in interview, Directorate of Health Services is likely to initially recruit 70 staff nurses to work in the South Goa District Hospital, Margao, which has been converted into a COVID hospital.

“We require initially 70 staff nurses to work in the COVID Hospital, Margao and another 70 staff nurses will be recruited in batches if the number of COVID-19 infected patients increases. Currently there are 200 beds in the COVID Hospital and another 150 beds will be added on the first floor of the hospital where these new nurses will work,” Health Services Director Dr Jose D’Sa said.

“All these nurses will be appointed on six-month contract basis which may be extended by another six months depending upon the COVID-19 situation prevailing in the State. All these nurses will work in the COVID hospitals round-the-clock and they will be provided personal protective equipment (PPE) kits,” D’Sa said.

D’Sa said that the government had invited applications for walk-in interview because of the urgency following the spike in COVID-19 positive cases in the State. By Monday, April 19, all the applications will be scrutinised and a merit list will be prepared. All the selected nurses will be recruited soon and they will exclusively work in the COVID Hospitals, he added.

Similarly, the government wants to recruit 50 medical officers purely on contract basis in the COVID Hospital, Margao, for which walk-in interviews were held on April 12.
