428 acquired foreign passports in the last three months

As per records, since 2015, over 23,000 Goans have relinquished their Indian citizenship in favour of Portuguese passports; Goa’s e-FRRO system records state 367 applications are processed, while 61 are pending with Mumbai FRRO; most individuals from Portugal of Goan origin acquired foreign nationality

MARGAO: In all 428 individuals have acquired foreign passports after surrendering Indian passports in Goa in the last three months.

According to records in the e-FRRO system of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Goa, 367 applications have been processed, while 61 applications are still pending with the FRRO at Mumbai.

The majority of individuals, who have acquired foreign nationality, are from Portugal as they originate from various parts of Goa.

It is pertinent to note that several Goans are opting for Portuguese citizenship primarily due to better job prospects and aspirational lifestyle choices.

It may be recalled that since 2015, over 23,000 Goans have relinquished their Indian citizenship in favour of Portuguese passports. In 2021, in all 2,835 Goans surrendered their Indian citizenship. 

In 2022, approximately 1,265 Goans gave up their Indian passports and acquired Portuguese passports. 

From January 1, 2023 to April 30, 2023, in all 620 individuals in Goa acquired foreign passports after surrendering their Indian passports.
