PANJIM: In the biggest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases, 570 people tested positive for the deadly virus, as Goa’s tally of infected people crossed 10,000 on Thursday. Also, with two more patients succumbing to the infection, the State’s death toll reached 91. 

After police, health officers and other frontline workers, the first case of a journalist testing positive for the infection was reported in Panjim, that of an editor of Marathi daily along with his daughter. Both have placed themselves under home isolation being asymptomatic. 

Union Ayush Minister Shripad Naik and his wife had tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, while on Thursday, a lady staff member attached to the Minister’s Panjim office got infected. 

The State capital Panjim is turning out to be a major hot spot, with 22 new cases reported. The city, which has been reporting cases on a daily basis, has till date 142 active patients. 

Thursday saw the highest single day spike with 570 people testing positive. The earliest high was on August 10, when the State reported 506 cases. 

With this, the State’s confirmed cases are 10,494 while the active cases are 3,491. With 271 recoveries reported on Thursday, the total cured patients are 6,912.

As per the Health Bulletin issued by Directorate of Health Services (DHS) both deaths were due to co-morbid conditions. The deceased are a 48-year-old man from Rajbagh-Canacona and a 43-year-old man from Aquem-Ponda, both admitted in dedicated ESI hospital, Margao. 

Further, of the 3236 samples tested for coronavirus, 570 were declared positive, while 1926 are negative. The test results of 740 people are still awaited. There are 105 patients in hospital isolation and 24 interstate travellers are in home quarantine.
