PANJIM: As many as 70 drunken driving violators were booked and in all 4,885 traffic challans were issued during the drive  conducted by the Goa Traffic Police from May 22 to 25.

The special drive against traffic violators was held from 6 pm to 10.30 pm, as special emphasis was laid on the traffic violations occurring during night time. 

According to a press release issued by SP (Traffic) Rahul Gupta, the Traffic Police booked a total of 879 major violations, which included 147 cases of improper headlight, 133 dazzling light, 127 dangerous parking, 100 without helmets and 40 tinted glasses.

He was reacting to an incident of dangerous driving on the Pilerne-Verem road on Sunday, with tourists standing on the footboard and sitting on the body of the vehicle.

 The tourists stopped in the middle of the road and were clicking photographs, a video of which emerged on social media, the Traffic Police stated that the driver of the vehicle was issued a challan by officials of Porvorim Traffic Cell on Monday, as per provisions of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for dangerous driving.

The matter was referred to the Court at Mapusa for further necessary action.

Last week, the Calangute Traffic Cell had issued a challan as per the provision of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, to the driver of a vehicle for dangerous driving.
