PANJIM: The fitment of digital taxi meters picked up pace in the last five months as 8,792 tourist cabs were fitted with the meters from September 2021 till January 10, 2022.

In his submission before the High Court of Bombay at Goa - that comes in response to ongoing hearing into a contempt plea by Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG), Transport Director Rajan Satardekar said there has been a substantial progress.

“There has been substantial progress in the fitment of digital fare meters. The total number of fitments, which was 1,247 as on September 17, 2021, increased to 5,732 as on November 27, 2021 after two months and has further increased to 8,792 as on January 10, 2022,” he said. With this the total number of bookings of vehicles awaiting installation has also reduced from 597 on December 11, 2021 to 171 January 10, 2022.

With approximate 3,000 taxis yet to get the digital meters fitted, the High Court has granted further extension for compliance of its order and asked the government to file a status report on March 14, 2022.

Meanwhile, the Transport Department decided to review the contract of Securinex Inc, one of the two agencies engaged to fit digital meters claiming it has failed to complete fitment of meters even more than a month of confirming the booking. This petition will be heard on January 14.
