MARGAO: A long-awaited demand of Navelkars will be fulfilled as the road from Navelim junction to Jakni Bandh will be widened. Navelim MLA Avertano Furtado has also announced that entire stretch will get LED lighting and that the area won’t have electricity supply for 15 days as the trees beside the road will be cut and trimmed.

The 1.5-kilometre stretch will be widened by 3 metres on both sides and will have a divider. The widening work will cost an estimated Rs 25 crore; Rs 17 crore is for land acquisition and Rs 5 crore is for construction of footpaths and gutters.

Furtado has sought the cooperation of the locals who will be affected by the work. He stated, "This was one of my election promises in 2012 as there have been several accidents, most of which were fatal on this stretch of road."

Traffic will be diverted on account of the work, and to avoid confusion, the MLA’s office has already contacted the Collector and traffic cell Deputy Superintendent of Police to make arrangements.

“The contractor has promised to finish the work by May. Presently, every house except for a few have given NOCs for the work,” said Furtado, adding, “Traffic will enter from Dialgona area and reach from Nagmoddem to Navelim junction, and other roads have been diverted from Mandopa and adjoining villages to avoid hindrances.”
