MARGAO: Social activists protested along the proposed Western Bypass at Mungul in Margao.

The activists alleged that the road work has resulted in a wetland and a water body being filled with mud. The Western Bypass work, which is being carried out from Verna to Navelim has crisscrossed many fields, lakes and other water bodies. Activist Iris Passanha has threatened to move the National Green Tribunal over the Western Bypass issue.

Social activists alleged that the land is being illegally filled beyond the acquired area and accused the Government of destroying the wetland, which earlier served as a water basin during monsoon.

Despite pending cases, the govt is pursuing the Western Bypass, which is an express highway for the Mopa airport, they alleged.

There is no project report or environment impact assessment done for the project, they further charged.

The Navelim residents have been stopping the trucks from dumping mud in the agricultural land and have vowed to take the fight to its logical conclusion.
