Nelson de Souza was last month appointed Minister for Planning

PANJIM: Goa-born Nelson de Souza was last month appointed Minister of Planning in the Portuguese government.

Portuguese daily ‘Diario de Noticias’ reports that De Souza was born in Goa in 1954 and arrived in Portugal at the age of seven along with his family. His father, a journalist went on to work in the printing division for TAP, the Portuguese State airline.

Interestingly, Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa has Goan origins and his father Orlando da Costa was also a journalist and writer.

According to the Portuguese government website, de Souza graduated in Finance from the Instituto Superior de Economia. He was Secretary of State for Development and Cohesion until February 18, 2019, when he was appointed minister. He has in-depth knowledge of the Portuguese business fabric, as well as of the national and European support programs for companies and the economy.

His profile uploaded on the site says he was manager of COMPETE/QREN Program and PRIME, member of the board of IAPMEI (National Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation) and Program Manager at PEDIP (Specific Programme for the Development of Portuguese Industry).

De Souza was already a part of the Costa government as he was Secretary of State for Small and Medium Enterprises, Trade and Services and Chief of Staff for the Minister of Economy, before being elevated to minister.

Earlier he was the Director General at the Portuguese Industrial Association until the end of 2013, where he had previously joined the Executive Commission, between 2002 and 2005. Before joining the ministry, he was Municipal Director of Finance at the Lisbon City Hall, from February 2014, where he was also the advisor to the Mayor.
