MARGAO: Spurred by Wednesday’s protests staged by voters and Congress workers outside Nuvem MLA Aleixo Sequeira's house in Raia over his defection to the BJP, the Goa police on Thursday deployed a large number of personnel outside the residence of Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, expecting a similar backlash from his constituents.
Kamat was amongst the eight who had defected to the BJP from the Congress party last week.
Preparing to control a chaotic situation, a substantial police force, along with barricades was seen at Kamat’s house at Malbhat in the morning. Mamlatdar Lakshmikant Desai, Deputy Superintendent of Police Shivendu Bhusan, and a few police inspectors from the nearby police stations were present at the spot.
Police sources told Herald that they had received information about an anti-defection agitation. “We don't want to take any risk, and want to avoid any law-and-order problems,” said the officer.
On Wednesday, Congress workers had told the media that they would protest outside the homes of all the eight MLAs who have defected to the BJP.
